Luxury at it’s best. Imagine a Luxury Rovos Rail Honeymoon. The moment we arrived at Rovos Rail’s private train station in Pretoria, we were treated with luxury beverages and snacks. Welcomed by friendly staff members that showed us around this picturesque train station. Because we had some spare time and were a bit early for our departure we decided to go to their train museum. We took the Pretoria to Cape Town route. There are not enough words to describe this experience and what they get right in such little space is breathtaking! Rovos Rail is one of the world’s most luxurious trains and is published in some of the worlds best travel magazines and television shows.
We stayed in the Deluxe Suite, which accommodate two passengers – perfect four couples. We had a double bed and a small lounge area and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. The wood-panelled rebuilt sleeper coaches really take you back in time. Luxury at it’s best. All fittings and facilities are of the highest standard. The en-suite bathrooms also offer hot showers with luxury amenities, hairdryers and shaver plugs. In your room, you also have a safe for valuables and a writing surface in the lounge area.
The in-room amenities include a complimentary mini-bar and we loved the fact that you can order the products you want to be included in your mini-bar. There’s also 24-hour room service available. That’s a huge bonus! We love Gin & Tonic, so that was definitely the number one choice for our minibar. There are also tea and coffee facilities in your room so you can enjoy a cup of tea while looking out of your room windows. We sat for hours looking at the view of the Karoo (the Karoo is known as a Desert in other parts of the world).
Each train coach has its own personal butler who will look after you while on-board. Our butler was Gloria and she was truly amazing and made sure we are always comfortable and enjoying our experience with Rovos Rail. They will assist in getting your clothes washed and ironed if needed. You can also request beverages for your minibar from your butler. If you have any questions, you may also contact your butler from your in-room telephone.
Breakfast is served from 07h00 till 10h00 in the dining cart at the front of the train. You have a fresh fruit selection, amazing fruit juice, coffee or tea and a warm breakfast with the bread of your choice. We loved our breakfast and the selection of items available was perfect. It was a chilly Winters day so we drove past Mountains filled with snow – sipping on our warm cup of coffee. There was also a heater in the dining room which made it super comfortable.
Enjoy a lovely spread of cakes and light snacks at Afternoon Tea served at 16h30. We thoroughly enjoyed the cakes and tea while reading a book. It is also a lovely time to get to know the other passengers on-board. It was lovely chatting to people from around the world all here for one thing – to experience Rovos Rails luxury.
Open deck and bar:
Right at the back of the train, there’s a lovely bar and lounge area where you can enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. We loved the billing and peanut finger snacks! Everyone on-board the Rovos Rail is so friendly and seem so happy which really makes us as guests feel happy. The open deck is spectacular and isn’t something you get to experience every day on a moving train. You can sit and relax outside or just go outside to take a photo or ten.
Dinner is an experience on the Rovos Rail and takes you back to the suit and tie days. Getting ready is nostalgic and really adds a The food was exquisite and definitely deserves a five-star rating. Yet again we were amazed by what they can do on a moving train. Everything was just amazing, from the wines paired with the different dishes to the food on its own. The service levels in the dining room are also of the highest standard.
On the second day of your trip, the train will arrive in Kimberley at about 10:00 am. You will then get off the train and are offered a glass of bubbly. You will meet your tour guide will take you on a tour to visit the Big Hole and the Diamond Mine Museum. We loved this experience. Back on route to the train you drive through the old diamond town of Kimberley. Back at the train station, you are welcomed by the friendly staff of Rovos Rail. You will receive a warm towel to wash your hands and offered a drink.
Your last day, the third day you will arrive in the historic village of Matjiesfontein – a magical gem in South-Africa. We loved Matjiesfontein and all its beautiful stories. This is a very small town in the Western-Cape in South-Africa, with a population of only 422 people last recorded in 2011. We had a walk through the town and thereafter ordered a hot chocolate and just sat inside the lounge in the train.
